Subj: Urgent! Possible comet.
Blindern, Oslo, 1991 Jan 21 20.15 UT
Dear Guy Hurst,
P O S S I B L E C O M E T D I S C O V E R Y
===============================================
I have received a telephone call from Mr. Olaf Skjaeraasen
concerning a possible comet discovery by Mr. KNUT B. AARSETH of
VOLDA, NORWAY. His observation was reported as follows:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Date and time: 1992 January 21/22 17.23 UT = 1992 Jan 21.724 UT
Instrument: 0.20-m Schmidt-Newton reflector, f/4, x25.
Total magnitude: m1 = 9.
Coma diameter: 2 - 3 arc minutes.
Approximate position: RA = 19h 52m Dec = +18 deg. (2000.0).
(estimated uncertainty +/- 15 arc minutes)
The coma was diffuse with a slight condensation.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Although Mr. Aarseth ruled out this possibility it should be
noted that the globular cluster M71 (NGC 6838) is located at
RA = 19h 53.8m, Dec = +18 deg 47'.
The observation has NOT BEEN CONFIRMED as the object has set
from our location.
This report has also been sent to Brian Marsden and Daniel
Green at the Central Bureau. I hope you can arrange a limited
announcement of this observation.
Yours sincerely,
Bjorn H. Granslo
