[vsnet-grb 179] GCN_Operations_RESTORED
TO: All GCN Sites
The network connection to GCN has been restored.
All outgoing distribution fucntions (sockets, email, pagers, cellphones, etc)
have been restored.
All incoming burst information collection functions (from HETE, SAX, XTE, etc)
have been restored.
There is no longer a need for missions that produce burst positions
to distribute them through the GCN Circulars (that was a temporary workaround
while the GCN Notices was off-the-air).
GCN was off-the-air from 16:00 UT 27 Jun until 19:40 UT 28 Jun 2001;
for a loss of 27.7 hours.
Although originally thought to be a hardware problem, it was, in fact,
a network community problem. Somewhere within the GSFC one of the 13,000
computers started "advertizing" itself as a router when in fact if was not
providing that functionality. This clobbered many machines within Goddard.
With apologies for the inerrption of service,
Scott Barthelmy
GCN Operations
