(fwd) [vsnet-chat 5361] Re: EF Sco From: "Mati Morel" <morel@ozemail.com.au> Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 14:18:26 +1000 I stumbled into the issue of the precise positions of EF Sco and hundreds of other variables in Sco-Oph by accident. About 1985, Robert McNaught (AAO) and I were in regular contact. Rob helped in identifying EQ Sco for me, but this was done by examination of Schmidt plates, without reference to HB857, HB887 etc. The star we identified lies at (2000) 16:54:52.7 -30:59:11.5 (11.6r, 16.5b). I wanted to confirm it by looking up the HBs. The opportunity arrived about two months ago when I downloaded the relevant HBs from the "Historical Journals" node of the ADS. The id. that Rob and I made for EQ Sco has proved to be correct. EQ Sco = HV 4260, and is "north preceding of pair" acc. to HB 887. Our own finder chart was published in _Publ. of the VSS, RASNZ No. 13 (1985), p68. There are scores of other variables which remain to be precisely identified, but the finder charts in HB 887 are not exactly user-friendly. It is better to check the original plates to be sure of getting the correct id. For this reason I have suspended my work on this field. At the suggestion of Nikolai Samus I have started looking at old variables in the southern milky way, discovered on plates taken before 1900 at Sydney and Union Obs., South Africa. The first batch: 69 variables in Vela, Carina, Cen, Ara and Norma. The positions are rough (no finder charts), but there is enough auxiliary information (eg offsets from DM stars) to pin them down. Using modern materials (catalogues and photos/photo atlases) it was possible to identify 65 of the 69 variables published in Union Obs. Circular 48, 1920 May 20. It would seem to be a hopeless task to try to recover the original plates, as they appear to no longer readily accessible. Union and Sydney Observatory are both closed.
