In vsnet-chat 4391, in answer to "> If you're referring to the SIMBAD query
page, then you can enter the object's name without the constellation.
Entering just 3C273
worked when I tried it.<, Dr. Kato wrote : "I'm referring to the AFOEV
database, at CDS, upon the explanation that the CDS system requires the AFOEV
to add constellation names.".
The AFOEV database is based at the CDS Strasbourg, but does not depend
directly from its. The database is managed by me on a PC and then transfered
to the Unix machine. I receive the most valuable help and assistance from CDS
peoples, particularly Dr. F. Ochsenbein and the computer engineer M. Wenger
and I am pleased to thank them warmly here.
As well as I wrote in previous chat-mails, I work under DOS and I am forced
into using only 8 marks for each variable name. I am also forced into adding
the constellation names in order to sort the stars properly.
In our homepage and in the ftp site, the stars are stored by constellations,
the only possibility to find a star. But 3 directories allows to find objects
with peculiar names : SN, NSV and the directory MISC (misc in the database).
This last directory contains, alphabetically, objects as various as 3C273,
Markarian 421 or Scovill suspected variable in Cygnus.
Any remark or advice in order to improve the use of our database would be
welcome.
Regards.
