Second announcement
Results from earlier generations of X-ray and EUV observatories
(Einstein, EXOSAT, ROSAT, ASCA, SAX, EUVE) over the past two decades
have opened up the field of stellar coronae, while solar observations
have greatly advanced our view of the only stellar corona that we can
study with spatial resolution. However, the observational advances
and discoveries have left many open questions regarding the nature of
stellar outer atmospheres. Fundamental issues such as coronal
heating, the spatial distribution of stellar coronal plasma, and the
nature and presence of elemental fractionation and abundance
anomalies, remain outstanding problems. Much also remains to be
explored concerning the existence and role of hot stellar coronae in
the broader context of the HR diagram, in star formation and in other
areas of astronomy.
Thanks to their high sensitivity and spectral resolution, the data
obtained by the Chandra and XMM-Newton missions are providing a new
look at the coronae of stars. At the same time, the spectacular
successes of the SoHO and TRACE missions are providing the most
detailed spatial and spectral views ever obtained of the solar
corona. The aim of this conference is to provide a timely forum for a
detailed discussion of the impact of the new generation of data on
coronal stronomy at large, bringing together observers and
theoreticians, as well as experts in other disciplines of relevance,
such as stellar structure and star formation.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
A preliminary Scientific Program with a list of invited talks is
available below. It will be updated with the contributed talks (check
the meeting Website http://astro.estec.esa.nl/Symposia/Coronae2001).
Topics included in the Scientific Program are
* Coronal Structure
* Observational Data: problems and new opportunities
* Flares
* Multi-wavelength Coronae
* Coronal Abundances, Winds, Mass Loss and CME's
* Dynamos and Coronal Heating
* Coronae over the range of spectral types and evolutionary phase
Contributed oral and poster papers are solicited and encouraged.
While time for oral presentations is limited, at least half of the
oral programme has been reserved for contributed talks. Ample poster
space will also be made available. Oral papers will be selected by the
SOC on the basis of submitted abstracts and author preference for oral
or poster presentation. Authors will be notified by 31 May 2001
regarding the outcome of this selection.
SYMPOSIUM FEE
The fee for participants registering before the 11 May 2001 deadline
is 200 Euro. After 11 May 2001 the registration fee will increase to
250 Euro. This fee includes the use of the symposium facilities,
refreshments during the symposium, attendance to the welcome cocktail
and to the symposium dinner, transport from and to the hotels booked
through the registration service and a copy of the proceedings.
REGISTRATION AND HOTEL INFORMATION
Registration and hotel forms can be found below.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The deadline for financial support applications is closed. Candidates
will be informed soon about the outcome of the selection process.
CONTRIBUTED PAPERS AND SYMPOSIUM PROCEEDINGS
With the exceptions of these selected from the SOC for oral
presentation, contributed papers will be presented in the form of
posters. Poster papers will be accepted on all topics relevant to the
study of stellar coronae. Posters will be displayed, for the whole
duration of the symposium, in the immediate adjacency of the symposium
hall, on panels approximately 1 by 1 meter. Ample time will be
available for poster paper sessions.
Both poster and oral contributed papers will be published in the
symposium proceedings, which will appear in the ASP Conference Series.
For both oral and poster contributed papers abstracts have to be
submitted by the 20 April 2001 deadline, using the template latex file
available below.
TRAVELING TO ESTEC
The symposium will take place at the European Space Research and
Technology Center (ESTEC), in Noordwijk. Most symposium participants
will be hosted in hotels in or nearby Noordwijk (transport to and from
the hotels is included in the symposium fee).
Noordwijk can conveniently be reached from Amsterdam's airport
(Schiphol), which has frequent flights to/from most destinations in
the world. Frequent train connections (approximately every 15 minutes)
are available from Schiphol to Leiden; Noordwijk can be reached from
the Leiden train station either by bus (approximately every half hour)
or by taxi.
Travelers from nearby countries may also make use of the train
service. In particular, high-speed train service is available to The
Hague from Paris as well as from Brussels and from a number of German
cities. Frequent local trains can be used between The Hague and
Leiden.
Further information can be found on the meeting Web site
