(fwd) 14th European Workshop on White Dwarfs - EUROWD 2004 From: Detlev Koester <koester@astrophysik.uni-kiel.de> Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 13:18:48 +0200 ===== Our apologies, if you get this twice - we have some problems with out mailiing list =============== FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT ================ 14th European Workshop on White Dwarfs - EUROWD 2004 Kiel (Germany), July 19 - 23, 2004 The series of European Workshops on White Dwarfs was started by the Kiel astrophysics group in 1974 and has since then developed into the most important meetings on this topic worldwide. After Kiel followed in two to four years steps Rome (Italy) 1976, Tel Aviv (Israel) 1978, Paris (France) 1981, Kiel (Germany) 1984, Frascati (Italy) 1986, Toulouse (France) 1990, Leicester (U.K.) 1992, Kiel 1994, Blanes (Spain) 1996, Tromsø (Norway) 1998, Newark (Delaware, USA) 2000, and finally Napoli (Italy) 2002. The larger time differences were caused by Colloquia of the International Astronomical Union devoted to the same topic (1979, 1988). The 14th Workshop will thus be the fourth to be held in Kiel and marks the 30 year anniversary of the beginnings. Since the 7th Workshop in 1990 Proceedings of these conferences have been published, which could be consulted for an impression of the scope and quality of these events. While the final details have not been determined by the SOC, it is expected that the topics will again include all aspects of white dwarfs and their relation to the immediate progenitors (PNs, sdB, sdO). The properties of white dwarfs in binary systems will be included, but not the typical topics of the Cataclysmic Variables (e.g. the physics of accretion). A tentative list of session topics is: * White Dwarf structure and evolution * Progenitors: Planetary Nebulae and subdwarf B and O stars * White Dwarfs in binaries: CV, double degenerates etc. * Atmospheres, chemical composition, magnetic fields * Variable White Dwarfs * White Dwarfs in stellar clusters and the halo IMPORTANT: The registration deadline will probably be April 1, 2004. Please reply to this email, or send a mail to koester@astrophysik.uni-kiel.de if you are interested in further information and would like to remain on our mailing list. Further details of the 14th European Workshops on White Dwarfs are available from the website: http://portia.astrophysik.uni-kiel.de/EUROWD2004/ This is still work in progress, but it will be updated regularly and should become useful very soon.
