Due date for Abstract submission is May 13, 2002 !!! << Main Scientific Organizer (MSO): Werner Becker, MPE, Garching, Germany - web@mpe.mpg.de Deputy Organizer (DO): Wim Hermsen - SRON National Institute for Space Research, Utrecht, The Netherlands - w.hermsen@sron.nl Scientific Organizing Committee: M.Baring, J.A.M. Bleeker, K.S.Cheng, R.Chevalier, D.Helfand, B.Rudak, P.Slane, H.Tsunemi, M.Weisskopf ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Colleagues, The 34th COSPAR Scientific Assembly will take place in Houston, Texas, from October 10-19, 2002. In the frame of this Conference there will be a 3 day Symposium E1.4 on 'High Energy Studies of Supernova Remnants and Neutron Stars', scheduled for October 10-12, 2002. High energy studies of supernova remnants and neutron stars have made substantial progress over the last decade thanks to the past missions ROSAT, ASCA, CGRO and the still functional RXTE and BeppoSAX. At present, the major X-ray observatories Chandra and XMM-Newton are very well suited to substantially enhance studies of these targets. The unprecedented imaging capability of Chandra as well as the high collecting power and spectral resolution of XMM-Newton and the timing capabilities both instruments provide, allow exploration of these targets in a much greater detail than it was possible with former observatories. The conference will focus on observational and theoretical aspects of the high energy emission from Supernova Remnants, Pulsars and Pulsar Wind Nebulae, Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft-Gamma-Ray Repeaters. General Information and Logistics: ----------------------------------- The relevant information on this Symposium and on the 34th COSPAR Scientific Assembly, as well as logistic information (traveling, hotel reservations) can be obtained at the URL: http://www.copernicus.org/COSPAR/COSPAR.html Registration: -------------- Deadline for Pre-registration: 16 August 2002. A registration form is available at http://www.copernicus.org/COSPAR/ The early deadline for pre-registration is 16 August 2002; pre-conference: 17 Aug 2002 - 09 Oct 2002. Financial Support: ------------------- Deadline to request Financial Support is 1 May 2002. A very limited amount of money will be available to facilitate participation in the 34th COSPAR Scientific Assembly. Please read the instructions at http://www.copernicus.org/COSPAR/houston2002/finance.htm and use the accompanying application form when appropriate. Financial support requests should be sent to COSPAR (cospar@copernicus.org) *and* to the MSO (web@mpe.mpg.de), NO LATER THAN MAY 1st, 2002. Abstract Submission: --------------------- Deadline for abstract submission is 13 May 2002 Participants willing to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation at the COSPAR E1.4 Symposium are invited to do so by following the prescriptions available at http://www.copernicus.org/COSPAR/houston2002/abstract-format-general.htm Contributed talks will be (12+3) min. Solicited papers are (25+5) min. We consider the option to upgrade contributed papers to become solicited if the SOC finds the topic of special interest for the community. IMPORTANT: It is recommended that each participant sends his/her abstract both to the COSPAR Secretariat (cospar@copernicus.org) *and* to the Session MSO (web@mpe.mpg.de), NO LATER THAN MAY 13, 2002. Papers Presentation: ---------------------- The proceeding papers of the COSPAR E1.4 Symposium will be published in Advances in Space Research, Elsevier Science Ltd. (Editors: W. Becker and W. Hermsen). Solicited papers appearing in ASR may be up to 10 pages long. Contributed papers may be up to 6 pages long. We look forward to see you in Houston.
