* Purpose:
In recent years, thanks to newly built instruments, we have
been witnessing explosive accumulation of high quality data regarding
"Formation and evolution of galaxies." The planned infrared missions
including SIRTF, ASTRO-F, Herschel and NGST will bring even more vivid
information on the early formation and evolution of galaxies. In this
workshop, we invited world-wide experts on the subject of "Formation
and evolution of galaxies" to summarize current status of our
understanding and future direction of the research. Bridging between
the theory and the observation is undoubtedly the most urgent task at
this moment. The observational data can be fully apprehended only after
theoretical interpretation, while theoretical predictions can lead to
the designing the observational strategies. The galaxy formation and
star formation activities involve complex interplay among various
physical processes such as gravitational collapse, hydrodynamical
dissipation, and radiative transfer. Thus our speakers are composed of
both theoreticians and observers. We hope this workshop provides a
forum for the initiation and continuation of front-line research
projects on "Formation and evolution of galaxies."

* Format:
This workshop will be composed of tutorial lectures, invited
talks and contributed talks. Lectures are intended to introduce recent
progress on "Formation and Interaction of Galaxies" to audience,
especially to graduate students. Invited talks will focus on
up-to-date, front-line researches on the subjects. Contributed talks
are designed mainly for young scientists who present their recent
research works. Poster session will be open only if there is sufficient
demand.

* Topics:
 - Formation of first objects and their properties
 - Starburst galaxies in the near and the distant universe
 - Galaxy mergers and their effects on the galaxy evolution
 - Morphological evolution of galaxies
 - Numerical simulations of large scale structure and galaxy formation

conference website. Registration fee is 100,000 won (about 80
US dollars), which will cover banquet, accommodation, and proceedings.
It will be collected at the registration desk during the workshop by
cash (Korean currency). Credit cards will also be accepted. Those who
need a financial support shall indicate it in the registration form.
You can download the registration form from the workshop homepage.

* Proceedings:
Proceedings will be published as a special issue of
Journal of Korean Astronomical Society.

* Additional Note:
 - There will be another workshop during June 11 - June 20, to be held
at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Please visit

(zoltan@astro.princeton.edu) for details.

 - The 8th Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting of the IAU will be held at
Tokyo one week after this meeting.

 - Korean weather in this season is rainly and hot. Participants are
advised to prepare umbrella and sunglasses.
