[vsnet-conference 16] The Pan-Pacific, 91st Spring Meeting of the AAVSO

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the American Association of Variable Star Observers
(AAVSO), I would like to invite you to a very special meeting of the
AAVSO. The Pan-Pacific, 91st Spring Meeting of the AAVSO will be held
July 1st and 2nd on the Big Island of Hawaii. The meeting will
include scientific paper sessions, discussions, observing, and the
membership meeting of the AAVSO .

Recognizing the importance of global cooperation and collaboration in
variable star astronomy, we are very excited to have the opportunity
to bring together observers, astronomers, and educators from around
the world for this meeting. This will be a particularly invaluable
chance to meet and collaborate with our Pacific-area colleagues and
friends.

The AAVSO meeting will be followed by another exciting event -- The
2nd High-Energy Astrophysics (HEA) Workshop for Amateur Astronomers.
This workshop, the second in the series, is being organized by
NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA/MSFC) and the AAVSO, and will
be held on July 4th and 5th. The workshop will include two full days
of lectures and demonstrations on high-energy topics including
Gamma-Ray Bursts and related objects such as Cataclysmic Variables.
The information will be presented by a group of internationally
prominent high -energy astrophysics experts.

During the AAVSO Meeting and the HEA Workshop, several field trips and
social functions have been scheduled, including a visit to Mauna Kea
Observatory, a tour of Volcanoes National Park, and a traditional Hawaiian
Luau.

Below is a preliminary schedule for the Pan-Pacific 91st Spring Meeting of
the AAVSO and the HEA Workshop. For more information, including various
registration and application forms, please visit the AAVSO website at
www.aavso.org. Limited funds are available for travel grants and
applications are due March 15, 2002. All meeting and workshop
related forms may be submitted via the AAVSO web site.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Hawaii!

Janet A. Mattei
Director, AAVSO
