There are rendezvous only with Mira type variables and they all were very low in the morning sky. So I think the possibility was very small to be discovered by chance by variable star observers. Please see the web pages for more information: http://www.aerith.net/comet/rendezvous/current.html Best regards, 2002 Mar. 1 8h UT 1.091 deg ( 65.5 arcmin) C/2002 F1 ( Utsunomiya ) 20h52m.8 -05o58' 12.0 mag T Aqr (M) 20h49m.9 -05o09' 7.2-14.2 mag 2002 Mar. 6 22h UT 1.491 deg ( 89.5 arcmin) C/2002 F1 ( Utsunomiya ) 21h07m.0 -02o54' 11.5 mag RS Aqr (M) 21h11m.0 -04o02' 9.5-14.4 mag 2002 Mar. 8 13h UT 1.310 deg ( 78.6 arcmin) C/2002 F1 ( Utsunomiya ) 21h11m.5 -01o56' 11.3 mag RR Aqr (M) 21h15m.0 -02o54' 9.1-14.4 mag 2002 Mar. 12 15h UT 0.146 deg ( 8.7 arcmin) C/2002 F1 ( Utsunomiya ) 21h23m.5 +00o44' 10.9 mag RW Aqr (M) 21h23m.1 +00o50' 8.7-13.6 mag -- Seiichi Yoshida comet@aerith.net http://www.aerith.net/
