There is a 14th magnitude star 20 arcsec to the northeast:
         RA           DEC        V     B-V    U-B    V-R    R-I
comp 07:04: 5.82  -03:50:38.5 14.077  0.587  0.103  0.370  0.412
var  07:04:04.81  -03:50:50.9

You should confirm the identification, either by visual inspection
against the DSS, or else with astrometry.  In 1998, V838 Mon was
most likely 15-16th magnitude at V, based on existing plate material.
