[vsnet-chat 5619] Re: SGR 1900+14

Berto,
SGR1900+14 was originally localized to RA 19:00 DEC +14,
so is a northern object. After better detectors were available,
the localization was substantially improved to
   19h 07m 14.33s +09d 19m 21.1s (J2000)
based on the fading radio source detected
by Frail et al. (1999 Nature, 398, 127).

This position has been searched carefully by ground-based
telescopes; see, for example, Vrba et al., 2000 Ap.J. 533, L17.
Like all soft gamma ray repeaters, it is a region of high
extinction. While it is unlikely you will find anything,
monitoring the SGR position can't hurt since to the best of
my knowledge there has never been an optical observation
exactly coincident in time with a SGR gamma-ray burst.
