[vsnet-chat 5563] Re: [AAVSO-DIS] V 4742 Sgr

Stan:
I made a quick search through VizieR and didn't find an GCVS reference with 5' of that position.  Apparently this variable star hasn't been well documented (if ever).  Tycho 2 gives Bt =12.105 +/- 0.158 and Vt = 10.893 +/- 0.81, so it is a red star.

I went back and measured an old CCD image and found: V=11.29 +/-0.07 (without color correction) on 2002-09-30 01:33 UT.  Comparison stars GSC 6846:1080 and SAO 186184.  My observation fits in nicely with yours.

Doug West

Greetings,

Whilst measuring this field I noticed a very red star GSC 6846 6. Is this a known variable - my catalogue is a bit dated? It looks like a rather red Mira star near maximum. Some measures:

V4742 Sgr
2002 Sep 23        0750UT    V = 9.99    V-R = 1.35
2002 Oct 10        0804UT    V = 11.03    V-R = 1.38

GSC 6846 6       RA 18 03 17.1 (2000) Dec -25 14 20
2002 Sep 23        0750UT    V = 11.74    V-R = 2.08
2002 Oct 10         0804UT    V = 11.16    V-R = 1.96
