The solution in these crowded areas, where the plate-scanning and
blob-finding are overwhelmed by the density of star images, is simply to
use a different catalogue! In the skt south about -20 Dec, just about
the _only_ catalogue I would recommend for your purposes is UCAC1.
This is readily obtained from the data centers, such as:

The accuracy of the coordinates is 10x better, and there will be no
spurious entries such as in USNO-A2.0.
