                     PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATOLICA DE CHILE
                     Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Faculty of Physics at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile
offers a new position in Astronomy at assistant
professor level, available as early as April 2003.
The requirements are a Ph.D. and a demonstrated ability and
commitment to excellence in independent research and teaching.

The successful candidate is expected to join the research and teaching
activities of the Department and to strongly interact with students.
Presently, the Department includes eight faculty and seven postdocs
doing research in areas of observational and theoretical cosmology,
extragalactic and stellar astrophysics. There are 13 graduate students
and about 100 undergraduate students in astronomy. We are interested in
developing the Department particularly in areas related to theory and
mm-radio astronomy. However, applicants from all areas of
astrophysics are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful
applicant will have access to the 10% of all the telescope time in
Chile, including VLT, Gemini, Magellan and ALMA telescopes. Teaching
duties are in astronomy and physics, at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Preference will be given to candidates able to teach in
Spanish within a year. Further information can be obtained at
http://vsnet.astro.puc.cl or from L. Infante (linfante@astro.puc.cl).

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and a description of
research and teaching interests before December 1st 2002, preferably by
e-mail. In addition, three letters of recommendation should be sent
before the deadline directly to Prof. Leopoldo Infante, Director,
Departmento de Astronomia y Astrofisica, Pontificia Universidad
