[vsnet-chat 5416] Re: CGCS 2792

Hi all,

A few further comments on CGCS 2792 (= CCCS 1705 = EsB 312). This is a
beautiful red gem through a 10-inch scope; I have seen it a couple of times
over the years while sweeping south of Eta Carinae but didn't make any
magnitude estimates (I was in deep-sky mode at the time!).

It seems to have been first noticed as red by the NSW Government astronomer
H.C. Russell in 1883. Russell communicated it to T.E. Espin, for his
revision of J. Birmingham's catalogue of red stars (Royal Irish Academy
Cunningham Memoirs, 5, 1-102, 1888). Russell's description, quoted in the
notes to the Espin-Birmingham catalogue read as:

". . . 1883.27. This is a remarkably red star, [mag. 9.5]. The colour is
as brilliant as that of the companion to [Beta] Crucis."

Russell's magnitude estimate would probably transform to brighter than 9 in
Johnson V.

Regards,
David
