[vsnet-chat 5069] KN Gem

The position and identity of KN Gem has been a bit of a mystery. It has been
mis-classified, mis-identified, and even mistaken for the Mira, BR Gem,
which resides happily in the same field minding its own business.

You can read more about this confusion and the solution in IBVS 5083.

Abstract: The GCVS type and light elements for KN Gem, based on Meinunger
(1965), actually refer to BR Gem. KN Gem remains an unconfirmed dwarf nova
suspect.

There are AAVSO charts which show BR Gem and KN Gem. KN Gem lies almost due
west of the position shown on these charts.

The AAVSO sequence only goes as faint as 133, so it is hardly adequate to
cover the range of BR Gem (12.6-<16.2p) or KN Gem (13-<15.5p).

Charts with a CCD(V) sequence for both stars are now online at
http://joevp.20m.com/charts/sxncharts/Gem%20KN%20sxn.gif
and

Two interesting variables for the price of one chart, which is of
course -FREE!

Special thanks to Arne Henden for supplying the photometry and Maciej
Reszelski for his research.

Clear skies,
Mike Simonsen
