[vsnet-chat 4882] Re: new Tycho variables & HD 235749

Thank you, John! That was my recent experience in searching SIMBAD
for early NSVs. As I discovered to my chagrin, however, SIMBAD may
find the NSV data for an "early" NSV if you enter a common name, such
as a Bayer or Flamsteed name instead of the NSV number. And, like
removing obsolete laws from the books, getting an object out of the
NSV once it's in there seems to be impossible.

There is an analogous situation with regard to naming visual
binary companions (including planetary ones). The Manchester IAU
GA started a process to revise the designation scheme for visual
binaries, and the USNO maintains a web page about it. The home page
is http://ad.usno.navy.mil/wds/iaumcm.html and archival material is
at http://ad.usno.navy.mil/ad/wds/wmc/iaumcm_old.html. Interesting
stuff.

Cordially,
