If the stars are cataclysmic, nova-like, etc., then
the best current reference is the Living Edition of
the Catalog of Cataclysmic Variables, found at
http://icarus.stsci.edu/~downes/cvcat/
This includes the latest information, finding charts,
etc. for every similar type of star.
