A quick search in SIMBAD and VizieR shows:
SS Cru = IRAS 12074-5622 (type M9) = AN 48.1920
The star appears in the UCAC1 catalogue at: 12 10 02.910 -56 39 35.98,
with red magnitude of 11.8. The variability was discovered on plates
taken at Union Observatory in South Africa, and was not simply as having
a range from photo-blue 12.7 to 14.
