[vsnet-chat 4652] Ceres

Dear readers,

I tought I was lucky last night, seeing this new light in Sgr on my starhopping way to V1223 Sgr. It was close to M54 (I only know that ID now..) and it was not there the previous night.
I estimated a magnitude around 7.5 (based on the Uranometria chart) which seemed to be changing slightly during the period of observations. However the observation after midnight in the freezing wind (using the old trusted apogee again) showed that the object had moved. I duly felt the cold that moment.
This morning I I checked up on this 'nova' imposter. It was Ceres.

It's the second time that this has happened to me. Around 1995 it was the planetoid Europa near FN Sgr.

Hopefully the third time will be the one!

I know some of you have had similar experiences...
