The Mira type star V407 Sco is situated at the SW edge of the open cluster
Messier 7. My attanetion was directed to this star several years ago by
Robert Price of Bethanga, Victoria.
Maximum appears to be occuring well removed from that predicted by the
decades old GCVS data. V407 Sco is currently at maximum brightness and
near visual magnitude 10. This is the first maximum I have observed since
I commenced regular observation in 1996 August and is about 3 magnitudes
brighter in the visual than the 12.8ptg indicated in the GCVS. The
assigned spectral class SE may account for this difference or perhaps this
is an unusually bright maximum?
Recent observations (magnitudes approximate):
SCOV407 20010317.77 105 WPX
SCOV407 20010322.75 105 WPX
SCOV407 20010424.56 102 WPX
