Zero padding is fine for computers but it's very inconvenient for people.
If you wanted to search for NSV123 how many people would know how many
leading zeros to use. The whole system would also break down for open
ended catalogues. The looming Tmz1000 is one example, but with the large
scale, deep surveys the standard nomenclature, V1234 Cyg, will be
overloaded and the catalogues would have to be rebuilt with additional
leading zeros. What is needed is a search engine that can find M1 even if
the catalogue stores it as M000001.
