I suspect a lot of us are happy to waste a few minutes each
night looking at a good comet! Particularly if it's
discovered during variable star observing like Comets
Kaho-Kozik-List (?spelling), Jones (1946), Tilbrook (1997),
Williams (1999) and most recently Utsunomiya-Jones (2000).
And who can resist any comet which happens to cruise past
your favourite variables...?

Comets are also very popular with the public and therefore
help to promote astronomy. We had a public astronomy night
here on Friday where C/2001 A2 was easily seen in all of the
telescopes and by most binoculars.

I'm at a favourable latitude to follow C/2001 A2 for the
next few months. So I'm hoping to waste more time looking at
it, instead of being a good boy and religiously following
all these GRB afterglows and 15th mag CV superhumps ;-)

cheers,
