[vsnet-chat 4145] GCVS 4th ed : latest electronic edition

A coupla months back the GCVS people brought out an updated electronic
version of the GCVS 4th edition, which now combines the main body of the
GCVS with namelists from 67 to 75 inclusive all in one file. Even better,
the remarks from the printed version are now also included as an ascii text
file in English. A first.

See http://vsnet.sai.msu.su/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs/iii/ for details

This may be of interest to some people, as I've seen posts that have noted
difficulties people have had finding newly named variables in existing GCVS
files on their hard disks. Equally, SIMBAD appears to be woefully behind
with respect to GCVS versions, namelists and NSV stars.

!!!GUIDE 7 USERS!!!

Currently variable star interrogation for Guide 7 users utilises an on CD
version of the GCVS that is complete up to Namelist 72 or 73. Namelist 74
is coincidentally covered because it consists of Hipparcos discoveries, and
Guide 7 covers Hipparcos variables independently. Namelist 75 is covered
by an independent TDF which uses the electronic version of said, as written
by m'sen.

ie: Messy.

Below is a TDF file to enable people to use the latest electronic version
of the GCVS volumes I-III, which as stated above now includes data from
namelists 67-75, as available via the above website.

It will be listed under Extra Tables as "General Catalogue Variable Stars",
and parameters such as mag limits etc can be set in the usual way.

Variables are shown as stars depicted at equivalent to max mag, although
take care to note passband with respect to the visual "reality" of these mags.

Objects can be "gone to" via the GOTO TDF feature... ...there is dialogue
box help and "More Info" help... ...it may be best to switch off the normal
"Data Shown/Variables" option when using this TDF. GOTO variable names are
neither case sensitive nor spacing dependent, but variables of the ilk
'vnnn con' will have to be expanded to 'v0nnn con', as this is the format
used in the data file [eg v400 cas should be requested using v0400 cas].

Both the TDF and data file should be in the Guide directory, else put the
full path to the data in the first line. You can call the tdf anything, as
long as it has a .TDF extension, though 'gcvs.tdf' seems simplest.

The following is the TDF... ...it can be cut and past to an ascii file, but
all the '!' characters MUST be removed before use... ...they are being used
here to denote the start and end of lines so any resultant word wrap due to
various email clients can be seen and amended via text editor.

Finally, the need to cover certain esoteric but infrequent flags in the
data table in a way that allows full data retrieval means that the
following could be a bit buggy with respect to info display due to it being
difficult to test _all_ obscure occurences of conditionals and format
needs, very especially all possible combinations thereof!!!!!! General and
more frequently known data should be okay mindst.

No doubt this latest version of the GCVS will be the one used in newer
versions of Guide, so this is mostly a stop gap exercise, but as I say, I
have noted people having difficulty from time to time with respect to
finding details for namelist 75 variabels, for example.

[NB MSDG wallahs can contact me independently in the usual way should they
have any difficulty with this tdf... ...though they shouldn't have ;)...]

Cheers
