A number of symbiotic stars, particularly the so-called symbiotic
novae (e.g. HM Sge) have spectra early in their outbursts which show
no hint of a red giants, and often these objects were not even
identified as symbiotic stars until outburst. Also, as far as I can
tell some symbiotic novae (e.g. HM Sge, V1016 Cyg) do not appear in
the 2MASS Second Incremental Release Point Source Catalog. The
H-deficiency is harder to explain in the symbiotic model however.
