[vsnet-chat 3661] Re: overobserving

Re: overobserving

Yet another excellent example how visual "overobserving" in the classical
sense significantly contributed to the discovery of a totally unpredicted
phenomenon can be seen in BL Lac in 1997. The hint of huge intranight
variability was first suggested (at least among our community) by visual
observers, which was subsequently confirmed by CCD photometry.
What had been the typical recommended observed frequency of extragalactic
nuclei...?... I presume it may have been once perweek or so (no one
probably recommended to make mutiple visual observations in one night).
This was a drastic example how "breaking the rule", even in visual
photometry, can lead to a major breakthrough.
