Incidentally, re this BF Arae thing...
If it lies at the D&S 93 position, as opposed to a GCVS position, then I
can tell you that BF Ara is also AC2000 3854577 [*]
NOW, this is a _single_ image Astrographic observation, which occured on
1904.644 and was at a magnitude of Tycho BT equivalent around 11.9 [though
probably that is a bit bright, even for a blue mag].
Some little time ago I checked the AC2000 single images for old outbursts
of CVs. There were remarkably few. Most of 'em that were caught near
maximum turned out to be UGSU stars. A few Z Cam stars were caught in
standstill too.
So, basically, the things that are likely to be at a set magnitude for
longer or have fairly frequent outbursts have a slightly higher probability
of having appeared in the astrographic surveys as a random occurence...
...sort of thing. Although U Gem being at maximum in the AC2000 as a
"single image" shows this is not a hard and fast rule. On the other hand,
SS Cyg wasn't caught in outburst.

[*] apparently Arne's buggered of to Europe for a month so I should be safe
on that "name" for a while... ;^)
