[vsnet-chat 3633] RE: [vsnet-obs 29952] Fw: X, Y, RR Cep

Hi, friends:
About the recent discussion on overobservations for mira
stars, I agree with the notion of not making estimates every night.
It's no use because of the long periods= the star is not going to vary in
just one day. The star is going to stay the same and maybe observational
error on our part will ruin a pretty nice lightcurve filling it with noise
that could have been avoided if we were patient enough to wait for the star
to actually vary.
Given the large amplitude is not useful trying to detect small variations
since they will disappear in the resulting lightcurve.
And also given its large amplitude, the star is going to vary if we give
time to it. Just five or seven days and we will note the difference and our
lightcurve won't have false up and downs.

You'll note that my report for tonight contains two mira stars that I had
already observed yesterday !!!!!! ( ;-)
Well, yesterday's conditions were very poor and I needed to confirm
yesterday's values in a clear sky as tonight's. That's the onl reasony for
these "overobservations". R Cen and R Nor are near maximum so it was
important to make a good estimate for period determinations. I think that R
Cen's new 521 period has gone OK and that R Nor is undergoing a "long"
cycle. We'll see.

Best regards to all,
Sebastian.

Mr H-G. Lindberg is also doing the same with IZ Cyg, TW Lyr, W Lyr,
CHI Cyg and many other mira stars. His estimations are correct but
once a day is too much for a Mira star.
