[vsnet-chat 2899] On the nature of RZ Vul

On the nature of RZ Vul

The recent deep fading of RZ Vul is remniscent of an R CrB-type star
(surprizingly, the star was once proposed as an U Gem-type star).
Such a suggest was already made at its early discovery dates, and I found
spectroscopy of RZ Vul in Herbig (1960) ApJ 131, 632. Herbig notes the
presence of hydrogen lines, which made the R CrB classification unlikely.
It might be interesting to note that Schaefer (1986) ApJ 307,644 lists
this star as a normal R CrB.

What else type would this variable belong to? From the spectral type
of G, and the presence of deep minimum and fluctuations at maximum,
I propose the RVB-type, like DF Cyg and SU Gem. After reaching this
conjecture, I am surprized to find that Tsessevich (1977) IBVS 1371
suggests both RS Sge and RZ Vul belong to RVb-type. A backlog of old
observations (visual and photographic) would eventually solve the
classification problem.
