The February 2000 issue of PASP includes a paper by Platais et al.
concerning astrometry and photometry of V382 Vel = Nova Vel 1999 (2000 PASP
112, 224). Their precise position for the nova for equinox 2000 and epoch
1999.53 is: 10 44 48.3981 -52 25 31.147. This confirms the USNO-A2.0
identification of the precursor by Patrick Schmeer (if I recall correctly),
which is not mentioned in this paper. That the star is even in USNO-A is
overlooked as well. They found a quiescent magnitude of V=16.56 and B-V=0.14;
USNO-A2.0 shows mb=16.4 and mr=16.4 (mean epoch 1979.563)---not too bad!
The paper also includes a faint BV sequence in the field of the nova.
I show this below. I have used either USNO-A2.0 (source A in column 's') or
GSC-ACT positions (source G). In the original table, the positions are given
in degrees only. In obtaining the positions (using the Strasbourg 'VizieR'
utility), I also checked for near companions to each star. Those that I
deemed "crowded" are so marked in the last column. This indicates that there
is at least one star within 10" radius and less than about 4 magnitudes
fainter than the sequence star. Obviously this is a dense field, so many of
the stars have close companions. Use of the stars for CCD photometry will
depend partly on the image scale of your CCD, and also on how well your
reduction software deals with crowded fields.
