I mentioned the Crab Pulsar for a reason. Back when I was
in early graduate school, I was involved in a small degree with
Victor Regener's pulsar project at Capilla Peak Observatory. He
had a multichannel, homebuilt memory system attached to the
PMT photometer on the 0.6m telescope, phased to the Crab pulsar
period. It was truely amazing to turn the system on and watch
the crab's heartbeat appear out of the noise in just a minute
or so. If it could be done 30 years ago with that setup, it could
certainly be done today with a modern amateur's equipment.
