Yes, this is indeed another possibility. The eclipse nature draw
my attention to the SW Sex interpretation. Does anyone know whether
eclipses have been found in VY Scl systems?
I'm not sure that the data confirm faint and bright states
in V500 Aql. It is common for old novae to keep declining
slowly with years.
