I noticed in Kato-san's listing of of IDs for UGC 8539 that the type
is given only as S?, evidently from the UGC. I have just examined the
galaxy on the relevant POSS-II J film copy, and find the classification
to be (R'1)SB(r)b II. The somewhat furry outer arms close to form a
pseudo-ring, and the bulge consists of a boxy or hexagonal inner ring
surrounding the nucleus.
None of these features has anything to do with the supernova, but it
is a handsome galaxy!
