G'day all,
After receiving several private queries about the latest antics of
Eta Car I've decided to reply collectively in vsnet-chat:
- tonight's visual magnitude (by me, 7x50 binoculars) is 5.1.
- my impression of Eta Car's colour in 7x50's is that it looks
about the same as a naked-eye view of Alpha Sco.
- I will put together a recent lightcurve and place it on the Web
when I have some spare time(!)
- I know of dozens of people who at least glance towards Eta Car every
clear night. We won't miss a "SN Eta Car" unless it's raining.
- the interesting spectral variations predicted by Daminelli et al
for late 1997 (and subsequently observed) were imperceptible to visual
observers.
I think that covers most of the questions?! ;-)
cheers,
Fraser Farrell
