In short, all designated (GCVS, NSV and some others) variable stars
are incorporated into the original list. The generator for summaries and
stars in need of observations pick up stars which have been at least
once observed (therefore the generator scans more than 40000 objects
every time the summary is created). For CVs, the list is more concise
and complete; we use personally updated list of CVs, mainly from previous
literatures including Downes et al. The inclusion of all known variable
stars makes it easy to work in accord with the all-sky survey program
like the MISAO project, guided by Yoshida-san.
Relating to 'serving up the data', the VSOLJ database is manually
maintained, probably as in the AAVSO or BAAVSS database, by the efforts
mainly by M. Watanabe-san. VSNET has a different way of accumulating
and serving the data: observation posted to vsnet-obs, conforming to the
recommended format, are extracted on a nightly basis, and become retrievable
via the WWW browsing interface, or a Java light curve tool. On a slower
basis, I manually gather up all posted observations (including those out of
the recommended format) and corrections to my personal database, from which
activity summaries have been generated. CCD and PEP observers and massive
surveys are strongly recommended to use the standard format in reporting,
so that observations become readily available to users.
