There must have been a number of these for 'The Astronomer', and despite
that I haven't surveyed even more potential papers, there have been a number
of incidences in which the VSOLJ journal has been cited as a prime source.
Representatives:

   A & A 249, 141 (1991) by Munari et al.
PASP 105, 1120 (1993) by Lemm et al.

Some 'older' papers on AQ Eri, AW Gem and CY UMa were also referenced
in several major journals. They have also been listed in Ritter and Kolb's
CV Catalogue. I don't think the authors are not "typical" professional
astronomers working in the field of variable stars :-).

I suspect these authors may have reached these literatures by searching
the AAA index (that was the only plausible way of that time), since there
were no comtemporary convenient network services, nor preprint distrubution.

I have just found the ADS has already indexed Publ. VSS of RASNZ.
