Supernovae Aficionados:
The Implication: (VSNET Chat#1591) "There are several complications which
make it difficult to predict the brightness of a supernova explosion".
The Query: (VSNET Chat#1592) "It's possible that there _is_ a simple
relationship -- but I don't know it. (by Dr Richmond)
Also, I don't know it, but want to know ;-) (by Dr. Yamaoka)
I ran across two articles that appear to be timely (?) to the subject
matter...although a bit dated I'm afraid.
_The light of the Supernova Outburst_ (by P.Morrison and L.Sartori ApJ.,
_158_, November,1969) where the discussion involves a topic entitled the
"Optical Reverberation" (or fluorescence) theory. Frankly, the article
burys me up to the neck in formulae (45 plus 4 appendix). There is no
indication that this excercise was a futile one as the authors again
utilize the theory, with an additional author (R.C Chiu) in, _The light of
the Supernova Outburst II, The case of SN 1972e_ ( ApJ., _198_, 617-628,
1975 June 15). My thoughts after browsing (lightly) thru these articles is
that perhaps this theory might be more applicable to SN type I's, however
there is some lively discussion of the type II's.
Cheers,
Steve
