When I used to observe intensively (I sometimes made over 4000 estimates
per month), I divided the night into three parts. Usual evening observations,
then sleep a while, get up and make a midnight observation (this sequence
sometimes merged into a continuous set), and sleep a while and make a
morning observation. In order to shorten the recording time, I remembered
a sequence of observations (several tens of estimates) without writing
and recorded it at once. In order to shorten the observing time, I remembered
all the fields I observed, and I could observe totally free of charts or
recording notebook (a telescope and a clock are sufficient equipment).
I wrote a program to enter observations, with which I could enter 1-hour
long observations in several minutes. So it didn't matter much to take a
short break to enter observations during clear nights, other than I attempted
to make a long time-series observation of eclipsing dwarf novae or superhumps.
