Brian mentioned several on-line search engines for USNO-A2.0, and
this is certainly the way to go if you don't have your own personal
CDROM set (there are only 500 copies in existence), or don't want
to allocate a 7GB partition on a hard disk. One URL he neglected
to mention is our own:
http://vsnet.nofs.navy.mil
where the primary copy of USNO-A2.0 is maintained. If I am doing
lots of searches, I find it more convenient to use a local copy
of the catalog instead of going over the web, especially if the
use is from within a software program.
Suprisingly, there are several downloads/day of the entire copy
of USNO-A from our ftp site. Someone doesn't mind using lots
of bandwidth! (We don't mind from this end as the usage statistics
help in justifying our T-1 line.)
