Good to see Mira back in the thoughts again. I've been watching Cetus rise
out of the Pacific the last month or so but no sign of the star as yet.
Does the companion have any effect on the light curve? I note that it's
supposed to be a rather luminous white dwarf accreting from Mira's stellar
wind. About two decades ago there was interest in this type of event
causing the transient Xray sources but it was abandoned. But the companion
seems bright enough to affect the combined light curve. No doubt there are
some UBV light curves in the literature somewhere?
The sample of 70 odd Miras from the VSS RASNZ showed one interesting
feature - that faint maxima were usually late. I haven't followed this
through as only a few stars had enough good measures near maximum to be
certain of the brightness level. I've been trying to encourage a project to
follow these stars through maximum with a V filtered CCD but without
success as yet.
I'll continue to watch the blank space in Cetus with interest.
Regards,
Stan
