[vsnet-chat 1158] "V Magnitude" Experiment - 1998

Kato-san suggested a southern version of the V Magnitude experiment.
The reason (if I remember my discussions with Dick Stanton correctly)
that the SS Cyg field was chosen is that there are a number of similar
magnitude, but differing color, pairs in the field that makes this kind of
experiment feasible. Having a field with a large number of comparison
stars is also nice so that a neutral-color standard sequence can be
constructed. I think you would have to find a similar southern
field (which is a good idea, by the way), and not just select an
arbitrary one.
As mentioned, there are a number of parameters in such an experiment,
and the hope would be that one or two parameters are dominant so that
you don't need to control the others. My guess is that a number of
such experiments will need to be done to separate out all the factors.
The eye and the observing environment are too complex for my tastes.
Give me a CCD any day!
