Dear all,
According to IAUC 6944, a new nearby supernova was discovered by
M. Schwartz on June 17.48UT. It was named as 1998cn and located at
R.A. = 11h35m54s.4, Decl. = +70o32'10".2 (2000.0). The host galaxy
NGC 3735 is of type Sc, nearly edge on. The offset of new star from
the center the of host is about 6" west and 10" north, which seems to
be inside or on the rim of the bulge area of the host. Note that
there are some foreground stars around this galaxy. Reported
brightness of the new star was 15.8 on discovery and not changed at
June 18.26UT.
NGC 3735 locates beyond Virgo cluster by delta(m-M) = 1.93 (Turry's
catalog), which indicate that the standard SNeIa at this location
would have a maximum brightness as 14.2 and the other type would as 16
or so (not affected by reddening). Followup magnitude estimate of
this star is encouraged.
Sincerely Yours,
Hitoshi Yamaoka, Kyushu Univ., Japan
