DEAR OBSERVERS :
We would like to make some comments about the circumstances regarding the
discovery of SN 98bn in NGC 4462.
1. It seems difficult to comprehend how a professional SN Search Group
would be aware of the presence of a supernovae ten day after obtaining
images of the discovery.
2. We would appreciate an explanation from this group about the 10 day
delay in communicating this important item of news to the astronomical
community in general.
3. The M1 Group still remembers the commentaries made by Dr. Filippenko
when he complained vigorously about the delay in communicating to the
professional observatories news of the discovery of SN 93J. His
remarks, and we quote, were "Unfortunately, news of the discovery did
not reach many observatories ultil the next day..." (
Sky&Telescope/Dec-93 " A Supernova with an identiy crisis" ). If this
information was made public 24 hours late, what is one to think about
this delay of 240 hours in announcing the SN 98bn discovery ?
Sincerely
M1 Group
Diego Rodriguez
