With regard to Berto's list of action items in the southern sky, it is
worth noting that there exists an amazing amount of photometry along the
southern Milky Way in the journals. Most of these sequences are not contained
in Mermilliod's photometric database partly because there are no positions
published for the stars and because of the bureaucratic hassle of making up
identifiers for the stars that can be referred to the source journal article.
Anyway, with some searching and grabbing positions from the GSC or A1.0,
it is _sometimes_ (not always) possible to find enough stars near a target
of interest. As an example, Albert Jones in New Zealand wrote some months
ago to ask about stars near Henize 2-99 = LS 3169 = PN G309.0-04.2 (among
other names), which is suspected of varying. It turned out that Gathier
(1985 A&A Suppl 60, 399) had measured numerous stars in the field in order
to study the reddening and distance to another planetary nebula NGC 5315.
Selected stars from the list were sufficient for Albert's needs. Among other
things, I found that the position/identification of Hen 2-99 in "Guide 6.0"
was in error. Here's the sequence, in case anyone else has an interest:
Name RA (2000) Dec V Remarks
He 2-99 13 52 30.5 -66 23 24 13.24 PN G309.0-04.2
HD 120526 13 52 17.2 -66 24 14 8.82
CoD-65 1565 13 52 47.7 -66 22 49 9.50 GSC 9016-1178
GSC 9016-1036 13 52 48.6 -66 23 31 11.61
GSC 9016-1869 13 52 33.4 -66 27 39 12.09
GSC 9016-1343 13 51 54.5 -66 19 23 12.75 GSC 9016-1343
GSC 9016-1872 13 52 06.6 -66 21 32 12.96 GSC 9016-1872
Gathier 11-257 13 52 26.8 -66 24 20 13.56 southeastern of two
Doubtless other variables fall in the extensive survey by Gathier, and
this is only one example of what's buried in the literature.
