[vsnet-chat 854] Magnitude Estimates for Current SNe

Supernovae Estimators:

Berto Monard wrote, (in part) and brings up an interesting point that I

magnitude comparison sequences: >>" SN 1998bn was definitely brighter than

If one scans the magnitude estimates of the two current visible SNe (SN
1998S and SN 1998aq), we can see a fairly wide range of magnitude estimates
for roughly the same UT time/s. The scatter in some instances approaches~
0.5mv. Are all of the observers using the same finder charts (sequences),
or are there different ones employed for the estimates? Or on the other
hand, are the pitfalls mentioned by: J. Isles:_ Webb Society Deep Sky
Observers Handbook_, Vol. 8 "Variable Stars" (pgs. 38-43)(1990) regarding
visual magnitude pitfalls, at work? I am truly esthatic to see the
participation of so many individuals rendering their time and effort in
this matter, so the above are just general inquiries....

Best Regards,

Steve
