[vsnet-chat 770] On Haseda's new variable star and V893 Sco

On Haseda's new variable star and V893 Sco

    N. Samus, the editor of the GCVS, has kindly provided the following
comments. I have forwarded the notes to the discoverer, Haseda. Though
any possible identifications looks pretty premature, follow-up observations
and type classification of Haseda's variable is still very encouraged.

Regards,
Taichi Kato

Dear Dr. Kato,
I am afraid I don't have too much. Satyvoldiev's charts are usually very
bad, and many positions published by him are greatly in error. Soon after
1972, Dr. Goranskij instructed Satyvoldiev to send us only PHOTOGRAPHIC
charts, even of bad quality, for us to be able at least to guess about
the identification. This rule was not strictly followed by
Satyvoldiev, and at the time of Astron.Tsirk. No. 711 the rule had not
existed yet!

In our files, there is a remark to Astron.Tsirk. No. 711 made by me
around 1983: "Cannot find the star using the chart". There are also
references to Perem. Zvezdy, 1975, 20, 161;Perem. Zvezdy Prilozh., 1975,
2, No. 10, 221; ibid., 1982, 4, No. 20, 127, 1982, containing studies,
always with Satyvoldiev's coauthorship. The object is listed in
PASP, 1993, 105, 127. A message from R. Webbink (June, 1996) says the
star is impossible to find using the chart, so the position can be in
great error.

What I am going to do right now is to compare the finding chart with
the field of the new variable - is there any resemblance?

Best wishes
Nikolai

Dear Dr. Kato,
I have compared the star field at the coordinates of the new variable
with the only published finding chart for V893 Sco. I see nothing in
common - unless WEST is on top of the finding chart (not unthinkable
for Satyvoldiev's charts), in which case I see something resembling
the field, but seriously distorted, in the chart.

We have a lady with great experience with Satyvoldiev's charts. I'd like
to consult her before coming to a decision. Unfortunately I'll not see
her until tomorrow.

Best regards
Nikolai
