I agree there's a problem with the visual observations because of the
variable color term, and unavoidable effects on emission-line objects like
novae and supernovae. I guess we wait and see what the AAVSO folks come
up with.
In reference to Michael Richmond's (all too accurate) complaint that
even professionals don't get the chance to do that much all-sky photometry,
perhaps my original comment derives from the feeling that I am the only
person in the northern hemisphere who can respond quickly to a nova outbrust
or similar event. Perhaps once the TASS cameras are going full blast, we'll
have only to look in the database being created to find reliable photometry
of all the stars we need!
