G'day Janet,
Your letter describing the V Magnitude Experiment did not arrive until last
Thursday. According to the postmark it was despatched several weeks ago!
Unfortunately, persistent poor seeing and the low altitude (for me) of the
starfield have conspired to prevent useful observations. Even after dark
adaptation, I could hardly see Star B with a 15cm telescope on a moonless
and apparently cloudless night. Star Z is only glimpsed and I cannot see
the other unknowns at all.
The seeing is reminiscent of conditions after big volcanic eruptions. I
wonder if the huge Indonesian bushfires have anything to do with it?
I was also wondering why three known variable stars are included among your
comparisons, but not identified as such?
Star A = V916 Ori (8.11-8.13B)
Star C = V917 Ori (8.77-8.90)
Star G = V1154 Ori (10.90-11.10)
Was this an accidental omission, or part of the Experiment? GUIDE 5 plots
all of these variables.
cheers,
Fraser Farrell
