Hello,
I'm a new subscriber to VSNet, and would like to introduce a
project that will be useful to you in event of a galactic supernova. I
am a postdoc at Boston University, and work on the Super Kamiokande and
MACRO detectors. These experiments, plus other neutrino detectors such
as SNO, Baksan, LVD, and Amanda are enhancing their supernova detection
abilities by sending potential supernova alarms to a central computer.
This computer looks for coincidences between experiments. Any
coincidence between two detectors' supernova triggers virtually
eliminates experimental false alarms, and allows some pointing back to
the supernova by timing the arrival of the neutrino wave at the various
detectors.
Although these experiments are sensitive only to supernova in our
galaxy or the Magellanic clouds, any observed neutrino burst would
provide enough advance notice for photon-based astronomers to observe
the new supernova from times as early as the photospheric shock breakout
itself. In the event that this coincidence alarm observes a signal, we
will send mail to VSNET and other interested parties. If you would like
direct notification, say through a beeper, phone call, or direct
internet socket connection, please let us know.
Also, this project is just getting rolling. Thus, any input
or suggestions would be greatly welcomed, as this is the perfect time to
make this project as useful as possible.
More information on this project can be found at:

here's hoping for a (not too) local Supernova,
